Don Mackay spent £75,000 in the summer of 1985 to bring Luton Town’s midfield/full-back to Highfield Road. A hard-tackling competitive player Wayne never really settled and had several injuries. His only goal was a freak lob for the winner at Oxford United. Once Mackay left the new regime of Curtis and Sillett did not fancy Turner and he was sold to Brentford for £30,000. After two years under Steve Perryman he joined non-league Barnet where he endured three successful campaigns before becoming a coach at Underhill in 1991. In 1992, Wayne returned to Kenilworth Road to become a coach under his former mentor David Pleat, who had returned for a second spell as manager. He was then promoted to the role of assistant manager in 1995 under Lennie Lawrence - a position he held for two years until he left the club in 1997. After a brief spell as assistant at Wycombe Wanderers he became the assistant manager of Peterborough United before finally getting a chance at being a manager in his own right when he was appointed as the new Stevenage Borough boss in 2002.
However, his spell at Broadhall Way was not a success and he was in charge for less than a year before being sacked.
