Gordon Strachan signed the well-built, blond, Norwegian midfielder in the summer of 1997. Trond had built a strong reputation in his own country as an elegant midfield player who got into the box to score regularly. At first Brann SK and then at Rosenborg he was popular with supporters and helped the latter to two championship titles in 1995 and 1996. Strachan saw him as the ideal replacement for the ageing Kevin Richardson and he made a winning debut against Chelsea. He was a virtual ever-present in his first season and was a key player as City’s form rocketed after Christmas with their best FA Cup run for 11 years. His first goal was a thumping close-range effort for the winning goal against Southampton. The following season with Gary McAllister back from injury and more competition for places, Trond got fewer games. In August 1999 Southampton boss Dave Jones paid £300,000 for the twice-capped Norwegian and he was a regular in his first season but lost his place when Glen Hoddle took over as manager. In March 2001 he joined championship side Sheffield Wednesday and played three seasons at Hillsborough. In 2003 having failed to stop the Owls being relegated he was released and returned to play minor league soccer in Norway with Hovding where he was also a coach.
