A prodigious young midfield player who looked set for a long career in professional football as along with fellow countryman Willie Boland he dazzled in City’s youth team. He suffered from homesickness in his early days and went back to Dublin. Persuaded to return to Coventry Bobby Gould gave him his first team debut days after his 18th birthday and won an Irish under 21 call up soon afterwards. The following season he was in the side that won 3-0 at Arsenal on the first day of the season and played a key role as City started the season strongly but following the departure of Gould and the accession of Phil Neal Tony was in the cold. In 1995 he left to return to Ireland and signed for Shelbourne who won the FAI League Cup and FAI Cup in his first season with Tony voted Irish Player of the Year. In the FAI Cup final he scored a sublime goal, still featured on Youtube. Tony helped Shelbourne to more Cup success over the next two years but a league title was elusive. A move to Portadown in the North had mixed results as did a spell at Cardiff City in 2000. Since then he has played for Shelbourne again, Dublin City and in 2005 he had a swansong with Shamrock Rovers.
