
A flying left winger who Billy Frith signed from Luton Town in October 1960 for £8,000. Stewart was a classy player who had starred in Nottingham Forest’s 1959 FA Cup winning team as well as represented Scotland in the 1958 World Cup finals, winning four caps for his country. After leaving Scotland as a youngster he played for Bury and Derby before joining Forest. Despite missing only one game in his eighteen months at Highfield Road he was sold to Crystal Palace by Jimmy Hill in July 1962, a decision which puzzled many fans. He later played non-league football for Dover and Chelmsford before moving into coaching with Notts County, Everton, Blackpool and Bury. His time with Everton was the longest spell, Imlach acting as first assistant trainer, then first team trainer for the Toffees between 1969 and 1976. He retired to Southport and died in 2001. His son Gary, the TV presenter, wrote a heart-warming biography of his father ‘My Father and Other Working Class Football Heroes’ which won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year in 2006.
