City’s record of signing players from Glasgow Rangers has been poor over the last thirty years or so. With the exception of Colin Stein most of them have been duds and although Steven Pressley was at the club only a very short time little was seen of the form that would win him 32 full caps for his country. Unable to get a regular starting place at Ibrox Pressley arrived in a blaze of publicity in 1994 and described as the ‘new Richard Gough’. Phil Neal paid £630,000 for the central defender who was to replace Phil Babb who had moved to Liverpool. His debut saw him facing Arsenal’s Ian Wright who scored twice in the first half hour and it was a foretaste of what was to come. In his first eleven games Pressley picked up seven yellow cards and a red at Old Trafford and looked short of Premier League class. To be fair City had terrible injury problems and an unsettled defence but Steven failed to impress. Big Ron Atkinson took over in the February and gave him a fair crack of the whip but after a dismal defeat at Ipswich put City back in the mire Atkinson preferred to rely on the old stagers Brian Borrows and David Rennie for the vital game at Tottenham and Pressley’s City career was over. In the summer he moved to Dundee for £750,000 and began a rehabilitation that culminated in him captaining Hearts to Scottish Cup success in 2006 and winning the trophy again the following season as a Celtic player as well as becoming first choice for his country. The irony in him playing for Celtic was that their manager Gordon Strachan had been Ron’s number two when City jettisoned him twelve years previously.
