Steve Murcott

Goalkeeper Murcott’s only appearance was a big surprise. In the days before substitute goalkeepers he was called from the stand to play after Jim Blyth was injured in the warm up against Norwich at Highfield Road. Reserve keeper Les Sealey was at Hillsborough with the reserves and Steve, who had played for the A team at Ryton that morning had to play. Few fans recognised him but he had an excellent game and kept a clean sheet in City’s 2-0 win. He never played for the Sky Blues again and was released in 1981 after his off the field behaviour and joined Worcester City. Sadly he was involved in a serious car crash returning from his first game for Worcester and never played again.
