Steve, a solidly built defender with a powerful left foot, was signed by Bobby Gould from Plymouth for £110,000 in 1993. Gould had tried to buy the England Youth defender when he was boss at Wimbledon and Morgan was at Blackpool. The young Lancastrian felt he had missed the boat by not signing for him then and couldn’t believe it when he was approached by Coventry. He went straight into the first team and was the regular left back from then until Ron Atkinson bought David Burrows in March 1995. Gould resigned soon after Morgan arrived but new boss Phil Neal was a big fan of Morgan. He had a vicious shot and scored some memorable goals including a 25-yard free-kick when City won at Stamford Bridge in 1994 and an extra-time goal at Wycombe in the League Cup to ensure City won the tie.
After losing his place he saw out his three-year contract at the club but his last season was blighted by an Achilles tendon injury. He only played a handful of reserve games before going on loan to Bristol Rovers. Steve joined Wigan Athletic in 1996 and in his first season the Latics won the Division Three championship but then he had recurring problems with his Achilles and required surgery. In 1998 he was on the move again, joining Burnley where he teamed up with Paul Cook, an old team-mate at Coventry. A year later he signed for Hull and had a good year under his old Plymouth team-mate Warren Joyce.
In 1999 he moved to Halifax but his injuries were seriously affecting him now and his stay at the Shay was brief as were periods with non-league Altrincham and TNS in Wales and in early 2001 he hung his boots up at the age of 32.
Since retiring he has run a solarium and a café in Oldham and works part-time tutoring for Central Sports a company providing gym services to the youth academies of some clubs in the North. He stays in touch with his old City mates Dave Busst, Leigh Jenkinson and John Williams and has attended the Former Players Day at the Ricoh.
