Steve, a tall ginger-haired striker, was the son of former Middlesbrough striker Joe Livingstone. A product of City’s youth team he scored the winning goal in the 1987 FA Youth Cup final against Charlton Athletic just weeks after making his first team debut. With talent like Regis, Speedie and Houchen at the club, Steve’s opportunities were limited but whenever he was called upon he gave a good account of himself but failed to find the net in fifteen appearances.
In 1989-90 with Kevin Drinkell injured Steve was called up for League Cup duty and stunned the crowd by netting four goals in a 5-0 win over Sunderland. He followed this with three goals in the next two league games but was shuffled back to the reserves when Drinkell was fit.
The following season he was at it again in the League Cup scoring five goals including two in the famous 5-4 win over Nottingham Forest but weeks later he was sold to Blackburn by Terry Butcher for £450,000 along with Tony Dobson.
Despite a good start at Ewood Park, when the Blackburn revolution happened and millionaire Jack Walker employed Kenny Dalglish as manager, ‘Livo’ was surplus to requirements. A move to Chelsea in 1993 as part of the Graeme Le Saux transfer did not work out and he made only one substitute appearance before a £140,000 move to Grimsby seven months later.
Steve, equally at home at centre-forward or centre-half had a long career at Blundell Park and made over 300 appearances before a free transfer move to Carlisle in 2003. He hung his boots up a year later and is now living in Middlesbrough where he has property interests.
