The talented left-sided defender/midfield player had a season long loan from Liverpool in 2003-04 and had an outstanding season. He started the season well at left back but impressed even more as a left sided midfield player with his gutsy tackling, good ball control and shrewd passing. His tireless running impressed City’s fans and he was often a goal threat with his accurate shooting. He ended the season back at left back and his overall consistency deservedly won him several Player of the Year awards. The management hoped to keep him at Highfield Road but the incoming Rafa Benitez persuaded him that he had a place at Liverpool. Over the next three seasons Stephen made almost 70 first team games including many European ties but in 2007 he was allowed to join Blackburn for £1.5 million. He won a call-up to the full England squad, winning his first cap as a substitute in a friendly with Trinidad & Tobago. Now a TV and radio pundit.
