Simon was a promising young striker signed from Cardiff City in 1997 for £500,000 who had limited first-team opportunities at Highfield Road. The form of Dublin, Huckerby and Whelan limited his opportunities and his few starts came when Dublin was suspended. His only goal was against Everton in a 4-1 League Cup win but he is probably better remembered for missing one of the penalties in the shoot-out at Bramall Lane in the FA Cup sixth round replay.
Â
Simon joined Wigan for £600,000 later that year and was a regular scorer for the Latics for four seasons before moving on to Tranmere where he was in the goals again. In 2004 he suffered a bad leg break and left the game to concentrate on a sports hospitality business.
