Flynn was plucked from non-league obscurity when Terry Butcher paid Halesowen £20,000 for him in November 1991. He made a dream debut scoring in a 3-0 victory at Bramall Lane and with his combative midfield style he was given an extended run by first Butcher, then Don Howe. What he lacked in finesse he made up for with a strong running, aggressive approach with no thought given to big reputations. Sean had spring heels and could beat much taller players in the air. Bobby Gould did not fancy Flynn and he was ‘in the cold’ for almost eighteen months until Phil Neal made him a key player. A spell as a striker had mixed results but he shone after Ron Atkinson arrived but an ankle injury ended a good season and Big Ron sold him to Derby for £250,000. He was in and out of the Derby team and was released in 1997 later playing for West Brom, Tranmere Rovers and Kidderminster before going ‘non-league’ with Evesham & Redditch.
