Gordon Milne brought the bearded Belgian winger in early 1980, paying FC Cologne £250,000. Roger had made his name at Fc Bruges in the early 1970s and appeared in the UEFA Cup final against Liverpool in 1976. In 1976 he was the first 1 million Deutschmark player when he joined FC Cologne and won 7 caps for his country.

His arrival at Highfield Road was in response to the signing by several English clubs of foreigners like Ardiles and Villa at Spurs and the Dutch pair Muhren and Thijssen. Sadly Van Gool did not have the same impact and was a major disappointment. There were some flashes of his undoubted speed and technical ability but eight months after signing in a glow of publicity he played his final game in a Sky Blue shirt. In the summer of 1981 he joined Antwerp in a swap deal for Ruud Kaiser.

Roger had a spell in the South of France with Olympique Nimes before ended his career in Belgium with Saint Niklase. He is now a scout and agent in Belgium.
