Iain Dowie signed the young striker from Cambridge United in the summer of 2007 and although he was not expected to be in contention for a first team place he made everyone sit up when he scored within five minutes on his debut as a substitute against Notts County in the League Cup. Robbie had been on schoolboy forms with Norwich City until the age of 16 before joining Cambridge City. Combining his studies with his football he graduated from Loughborough University and scored 40 goals in 77 games for the Southern League side. In 2006 Cambridge United signed him and he scored 17 goals in 33 games, attracting the interest of League clubs. After his scoring debut for the Sky Blues, several energetic substitute appearances enhanced his reputation and he was given his first start at Old Trafford in the League Cup. Robbie had a dream game, playing as a wide midfield player and causing endless problems to the United defence. He scored one league goal in the win over Blackpool but he picked up a bad hamstring tear at Stoke, which kept him out until New Years Day. After his injury his confidence seemed low and he had lost the early season zip in his play. After numerous substitute appearances when he failed to influence the game he was recalled to the starting line-up when Leon Best was suspended and gave two hard-working performances as City picked up four points.
