Peter had 13 years at Nottingham Forest from joining them as an apprentice in 1961 and made 416 appearances, the majority as a right-back. The son of Forest player Frank Hindley, Peter won England under 23 honours and was a tough-tackling, no-nonsense defender. After losing his place at Forest Gordon Milne signed him for £35,000. After a disastrous debut - City lost 1-5 at Newcastle - he formed a solid, if slow central defensive partnership with Larry Lloyd but lost his place to Alan Dugdale. In 1975 his City career ended where it started, at St James’ Park in a 0-4 defeat. Peter joined Peterborough the following summer and was a regular for Posh for three seasons. He settled in Peterborough after hanging up his boots and became a painter and decorator.
