Paul started is career at Luton Town where he made over 150 appearances as a right-sided midfield player. Ron Atkinson signed him for the Sky Blues in the summer of 1995, paying the Hatters £1 million for the highly rated player. In 1992 he was involved in a serious road accident that left his Luton colleague Dean Salton, severely injured and forced to give up football. Telfer made a full recovery. Telfer was a virtual ever present in his six years at Coventry and was a solid but unspectacular player in first Atkinson’s team and later Gordon Strachan’s team. Renowned for his fitness levels, Paul would run all day for the club and in 2000 his efforts were rewarded with his one and only full Scottish cap. In 2001 during City’s crucial game at Villa Park he broke his leg and was still recovering when Strachan was sacked four months later. Telfer was out of contract and refused to re-sign for City and when Strachan was appointed at Southampton a month later Telfer signed for the Saints. Converted to a right-back Paul had four good years at Southampton and appeared in the FA Cup final in 2003 before following Strachan to Celtic. Since leaving Celtic in 2007 he has played for Bournemouth and Leeds United. He is the nephew of former Scottish international Eamonn Bannon.Â
