Paul made his name as a striker cum right winger at Portsmouth where he made almost 200 appearances in five seasons before Gordon Strachan paid Pompey £300,000 for him after good performances in the 1998 World Cup for his adopted nation Jamaica. He was always going to find it hard to break into the first team with Dublin, Huckerby and Whelan in front of him but he was given only two league starts and after three months told by Strachan that he did not feature in his plans. Paul went out on loan four times (to Bury, Sheffield United, West Brom and Walsall) before joining Walsall permanently in 2000. He helped the Saddlers to promotion to Division 1 (the Championship) in 2001 but joined Rushden & Diamonds soon afterwards. Spells at Tranmere, Chesterfield and Walsall again have followed.
