Bobby Gould signed the tall, rangy striker on loan from his old club West Brom in the autumn of 1992. Injuries to Kevin Gallacher and Robert Rosario gave Williams his chance and he was a brief substitute against Chelsea and played 90 minutes at Elland Road a week later. His performances were fairly unimpressive and he returned to the Hawthorns soon after. A junior with Leeds, his nomadic career took him from Nuneaton Borough via Newport County, Sheffield United, Hartlepool, Stockport before a £250,000 move to West Brom in 1991. In 1993 he rejoined Stockport and later played for Rochdale and Doncaster. Paul won one cap for Northern Ireland in 1991 as a substitute. His mother Betty was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as one of the organisers of the peace movement in Northern Ireland.
