Neil made his name as a solid lower division ‘keeper in seven years with Bury from 1964-71 and after a brief spell at Blackpool he arrived at Highfield Road. Caretaker boss Bob Dennison had sold Eric McManus and needed an understudy for Bill Glazier and Neil, who cost £10,000 fitted the bill. His first team appearances were limited under Glazier but in 1974-75 he replaced the veteran Glazier as first-team keeper and performed well in the First Division. In the summer of 1975 Gordon Milne signed Bryan King from Millwall signalling that Ramsbottom was not in his plans. Neil moved to Sheffield Wednesday and became a goalkeeping nomad with spells at Plymouth, Blackburn, Sheffield United and Bradford City and Bournemouth with a couple of summers spent in the United States with New Jersey Americans. In 1984 he left league football and signed for Chorley. Last heard of living in Blackburn.
