FA Cup winner 1987
Bobby Gould signed Gynn from Peterborough United for £60,000 in the summer of 1983 when the new boss had to rebuild the side. At 5 foot 4 inches Gynn was one of the shortest players to play for the club in the post-war period. A quick and skilful midfielder, he played an important part in the 1987 FA Cup run; his goals at Stoke in the fifth round, the winner, and in the semi final, after coming on as a substitute against Leeds, were crucial. At Wembley he looked set for the sub’s bench until Brian Borrows’ injury a week before the final and Micky gave a sublime performance and came close to scoring in extra-time. He was one of few of the Cup Final side to survive Terry Butcher’s cull in 1991 and went on to give ten year’s service to the club. His high work-rate and ability to score vital goals endeared him to City fans. In 1993 he joined Stoke City but was forced to retire from the professional game through injury the following year. In 2005 after a fan’s campaign, he was rewarded with a deserved testimonial game. Micky works as a postman and in the media and attends most of City’s home games.
