Signed from Gillingham for £55,000 by Bobby Gould in 1983. A left back/left sided midfield player who scored on his home debut against Everton and was a regular in Gould’s and then Don Mackay’s teams. In January 1987, after losing his place to Nick Pickering he joined Leeds and three months later appeared against the Sky Blues in the FA Cup semi-final. He played over 400 league games, including five years in the top tier with Southampton, and later Stoke and Fulham.
Beginning his managerial career as Fulham’s player-manager in 1996, he earned promotions and twice won Manager of the Season. His career saw mixed success, managing clubs like Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City, Coventry City, and Sheffield United. Adams achieved notable promotions with Fulham, Brighton, and Port Vale. After a brief stint with Sligo Rovers in 2015, he retired from management and launched a football consultancy business.
