Mick was brought up in Leamington Spa and signed professional forms for City in January 1966, after a three-year apprenticeship. For the next fifteen years he served the club both at full-back and as a central defender and, but for a poor spell in 1974-75 would have overtaken George Curtis’ club appearance record. In his early days he was an attacking full-back, always looking to overlap and make one of his famous looping crosses. Most of his goals came from the penalty spot from which he was normally deadly. He established himself in the early days in the top flight and was an automatic choice in the era and a major influence in the team that qualified for Europe in 1970. In 1974 he lost his place to Graham Oakey and joined York City on loan for six months but returned and established himself as a defensive sweeper alongside first Alan Dugdale and later Jim Holton. He went on loan to NASL club Detroit Express in 1979 but was still good enough to make over 30 appearances for City in 1980-81. He moved on to Derby in the summer of 1981, in a £20,000 deal but it was a move he regretted and his contract was cancelled in the following January. He played a few games for AP Leamington but then retired to concentrate on his antiques shop in Leamington. He did return to Highfield Road in 1985 as youth-team coach and his team won the FA Youth Cup in 1987, but left the club in 1989. He lived near Warwick and played golf to a very high standard.
