Doyle was a junior at Celtic for five years before Gary McAllister signed him on a free transfer in the summer of 2003. The spiky Irishman went straight into the first team as a left-sided midfielder and scored an excellent goal in his second game at Ipswich. He quickly became a regular choice and soon moved into central midfield as the ball-winner. Since then he was a virtual ever present and captained the side in 2005-06. The tough tackling combative midfielder racked up over 200 appearances for the Sky Blues and in 2004 won a full cap for the Republic of Ireland as a substitute against Holland. Doyle’s disciplinary record was poor at times and accounted for his rare missed games however he has been a key man for the club for five seasons.
