A right-back who was in Brian Borrows understudy for two years before Terry Butcher gave him his chance when Bugsy was injured. He looked a confident and skilful defender but in only his sixth appearance at Cambridge he suffered a serious knee injury in a bad tackle by Cambridge’s Liam Daish. Martyn was out for over a year and went on loan at Swindon. In 1993-94 Bobby Gould gave him another chance but he lacked something. His playing career took him to the lower divisions where he played over 300 games for Crewe, Reading, Southend and Chesterfield. His last league club as a player was Huddersfield where he also coached.
