Luke had been spotted as a prodigious young goalkeeper and joined Manchester United for £500,000 as a 17-year old in 2002. With United’s depth of talent he never played a first-team game for the Reds. He initially joined City on 3-month loan in October 2004 after Peter Reid became frustrated with Scott Shearer’s inconsistency. Luke immediately impressed with confident handling and shot-stopping. The loan was extended until the end of the season and Steele played virtually every game apart from some respite when Micky Adams brought Ian Bennett in on loan. Two further loans occurred, first at the start of the following season, a season-long loan that was curtailed after a week when he was part of a swap transfer that took Tomasz Kuszczak from West Brom to Old Trafford. Later, in December, Luke returned to cover for Andy Marshall but played only a handful of games before returning to Albion.
West Brom loaned him to Barnsley in February 2008 and he made his debut in an FA Cup tie at Anfield which the Tykes won 2-1. Barnsley’s Cup run continued to the semi-finals by virtue of a memorable victory over Chelsea but the fairytale run ended at Wembley in the semi-final against Cardiff.
