FA Cup winner 1987
Lloyd overcame enormous adversity to be a key part of City’s team at Wembley in 1987 and crossed the ball which Gary Mabbutt deflected into his own net for City’s extra-time winner. McGrath’s catalogue of injuries would have ended many careers and included a broken leg, three dislocated shoulders, fractured cheekbones and eye and knee problems. The Birmingham-born McGrath was capped at full-back for England Youth and made his first team debut as a central defender in City’s biggest defeat since the war, an 8-2 hammering at Southampton. Don Mackay recognised that the hard-tackling Lloyd was ideally suited as the midfield anchor man and once there he was first choice in that position for six seasons, when fit. He made an outstanding contribution in the 1986-87 season, even scoring three goals, and his marking job on Glenn Hoddle at Wembley earned him many plaudits. Injuries affected his appearances after that but he always relished the big challenge and generally came out on top in some fascinating clashes with Paul Gascoigne. In 1993 he was stretchered off at Hillsborough with ligament trouble and his City career was over. He joined Portsmouth but his appearances were limited. He now runs a sports club and bar in Allesley and lives in the city.
