Leigh was signed from Hull City on transfer deadline day in 1993 having made over 130 appearances for the Tigers in six years. A left winger who was reputedly one of the fastest players in the league having reached the final of the Sprint Challenge for footballers, Leigh had an interesting ‘step-over’ trick which fooled few. He failed to display much speed for City and did not set the Premier League alight. After a brief loan at Birmingham he joined St Johnstone in 1995 and helped them win the Scottish First Division title two years later. He subsequently had short spells with Wigan, Hearts, Dundee United and Barrow.
