A tall, rangy striker who was signed for £250,000 by Roland Nilsson in early 2002 after impressing in a loan period from Portsmouth. Replacing Jay Bothroyd he scored in both his first two games (victories over Crystal Palace and Wimbledon) and with his strength in the air and mobility he looked the perfect foil for Lee Hughes. After signing a permanent contract his form never really hit the same heights again and he managed only three further goals as City’s promotion hopes faded. Under Gary McAllister the following season his form barely improved and after an ankle injury he joined Stoke on loan, later signing a short term contract. Released by the Potters in 2003 he slipped into non-league football playing for Telford United – remarkable fall from grace.
Lee made his name with Wolves, Derby and Port Vale before a £1 million move to Bradford City where he had an excellent partnership with Robbie Blake, netting 23 goals as the Bantams won promotion to the Premiership under Paul Jewell. His scoring touch deserted him in the top flight (but he did score against the Sky Blues) and he lost his place. Following a short loan spell with Manchester City he was sold to Portsmouth for £1.3 million but made little impression at Fratton Park.
