Gordon Strachan signed Hughes from West Brom for £5m in the summer of 2001 and saw him as the proven goalscorer to get City back into the Premier League at the first attempt. The former roofer had scored goals regularly for Kidderminster and the Baggies and he scored on his debut at Stockport. His early form with City was patchy however and he netted only five goals in 24 games, including two penalties. His form took off after Christmas and he scored seven in seven games including a hat-trick in a 6-1 win at Crewe. His better form was probably down to the arrival of Lee Mills who laid on chances for the hard-working Hughes. Early the following season with City in financial trouble Hughes was sold back to West Brom, a Premier League side, but his scoring form deserted him and he failed to net in 23 appearances. In late 2003 he was involved in a serious car accident and was later found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and jailed for six years. Released from prison in 2007 he earned a contract at Oldham.
