Signed for £1.25 million in 1998 from Belgium club Ghent by Gordon Strachan on the advice of European scout Ray Clarke, Laurent had a disastrous start in England, breaking his leg 36 minutes into his reserve team debut. His recovery was slow and he finally made his debut 18 months after signing but did not make a league bow until 2001 when he scored the winning goal at Bramall Lane with his first touch. He was a regular for some months and caused problems for many full-backs with his speed and dribbling ability before a back injury sidelined him. His true potential was seen in a 6-1 win at Crewe with a performance of the highest quality and he scored two of the goals. A badly gashed leg in the opening game of the 2002-03 season kept him out again and in October 2002 he returned to Belgium to sign for Lierse SK. In 2005 he joined Anderlecht and has subsequently played for ADO Den Haag and Ajax. In 2006 he was implicated in a match-fixing scandal involving Belgian clubs.
