Accomplished midfielder Kevin Richardson was one of Ron Atkinson’s first signings when he took over as City manager in February 1995. Signed for £300,000 from Atkinson’s former club Aston Villa he added a bite in City’s midfield and was a major influence in City’s escape from relegation that season. He had won his sole England cap just a year previously and his tremendous work-rate made him a strong asset to the team. In the 1996-97 he played alongside Gary McAllister and was one of the team’s most consistent performers but early the following season, having lost his place to Trond Soltvedt, he was sold to Southampton where he helped the Saints rise dramatically up the table.
Kevin has the rare distinction of winning League Championship medals with two clubs. In 1985, a year after winning the FA Cup with Everton, he was a key member of the Toffees side that lifted the title. Then after a short spell with Watford he joined Arsenal and won the title in 1989. There followed another brief sojourn, in Spain with Real Sociedad, before he went to Villa Park.
