Born in Inverness Kevin is one of a number of City players who cut their teeth in the competitive Highland League. He played for Inverness Caley, who later merged with Inverness Thistle and rocketed up the Scottish League structure. He was discovered in the Highlands by Leicester City in 1980 and made his name in England as a hard working midfielder, eventually becoming club captain at Leicester. He arrived at Anfield halfway through the 1984-85 season when Liverpool boss Joe Fagan paid Leicester £400,000 for him.

MacDonald never held down a regular spot at Anfield, but his work as a left-sided midfielder helped Liverpool to the league title in 1986 and then he helped them to the double as they beat Merseyside rivals Everton in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

He was on the verge of the Scotland squad in 1986 when he broke his leg playing for the Reds at Southampton and was out of the game for two years. He returned to action but was never quite the same player. After loan spells at Leicester and Glasgow Rangers John Sillett signed him in September 1989 when City were amazingly top of Division One, having won three of their first four games. Kevin became a regular in City’s midfield for a large part of that season and at one stage it looked as though he might revive his career but his speed had gone and he had a noticeable limp. He left Highfield Road to join Walsall in 1991 soon after Terry Butcher arrived as manager and two years later hung his boots up.
Since then he has been steadily building a reputation as a coach, first at Leicester under Brian Little, then at Aston Villa, where he has coached under five different managers in eleven years. During Steve Staunton’s reign as Republic of Ireland manager Kevin was his number two on a part-time basis.
