Ken, a big bustling centre-forward, was Jesse Carver’s last signing as manager of Coventry City in December 1955 and he was a successful goalscorer for two seasons in a very average Coventry side. Hailing from the North East he made his name as understudy to Tommy Lawton at Notts County before a great season in 1952-53 earned him a big money move to First Division Middlesbrough. Things didn’t work well at Boro and the team were relegated and Ken struggled to score goals. He was vying with Brian Clough for the number nine shirt when City came in for him and relished the move. When he lost his place to Ray Straw he joined Newport County and refound his scoring form. After joining Swindon in 1961 he successfully converted to play at centre-half. In 1962-63 he was in the Swindon side that won promotion to Division Two alongside Ernie Hunt. He hung his boots up in 1965 and later ran a grocery business.
