FA Cup winner 1987
Keith will forever be remembered for his stunning diving header for City’s second goal in the 1987 FA Cup final. It deservedly won the BBC Goal of the Season award and has been voted the finest Cup Final goal of all-time. Keith only joined City in the summer of 1986, from Scunthorpe United for £50,000 after a career that had seen him play for Hartlepool, Leyton Orient and York City before Scunthorpe. His main claim to fame before 1986 was that he scored York’s winning goal in a famous FA Cup victory over Arsenal. After appearing in the first three games of the 1986-87 season he lost his place and was not recalled until the Christmas game with Tottenham when he scored in a famous 4-3 win. From then on he was a regular and scored five goals in the Cup run including the winner at Old Trafford, two goals at Sheffield Wednesday in the quarter-final and another in the semi-final with Leeds. His league-scoring rate was disappointing however and over the next two seasons he struggled to win a place in the team. One of his final games for City was the winner against Aston Villa in 1989, city’s first victory over Villa for 52 years. Keith joined Hibernian for £300,000 and had some success in Scotland before moving back to England to join Port Vale. A player-manager’s spell at Hartlepool ended unsatisfactorily. In 2007 he was one of the players selected for the new Wembley Stadium's 'Walk of Fame' prior to the venue's first FA Cup final almost 20 years to the day from his historic goal at the old Wembley stadium. In 2006 the biography of his footballing career entitled ' A Tenner & A Box of Kippers' was published.
