John was signed by Gordon Strachan in December 1998 after impressive scoring with Portsmouth. Seen as the replacement for Dion Dublin he was given too few chances in a Sky Blue shirt to show his goalscoring prowess. In only 18 starts he still managed 10 goals but was too often used as a substitute.
A move to Spain in 2001 revitalised his career and he has scored consistently for first Osasuna Pamplona and later Alaves. A regular in the Australian national side John scored the vital shoot-out penalty which defeated Uruguay and clinched a 2006 World Cup finals place. At the finals he appeared in all four games as a substitute and scored one goal. He was the first Australian to play and score in Spain's La Liga, England's Premier League, and Italy's Serie A.
After retiring from playing, he transitioned into coaching, leading teams such as Melbourne Heart, Brisbane Roar, and is current head coach of A-League club Western United.
