Jim was signed by Gordon Milne in 1977 and was one of the most promising young Irish players at the time. The central defender had two spells at City with his longest run in the first team being 11 games in the spring of 1979 but the outstanding form of Gary Gillespie kept him in the reserves. He had a loan period with Torquay before spending the summer of 1980 in the USA with Detroit Express. A winter in Hong Kong with Seiko followed before he returned to City in 1981. Even with a thin squad Jim got few chances and appeared only four times. That summer he joined Birmingham and was a regular for four seasons. After returning to Northern Ireland in 1991 he played for Ballymena, Carrick Rangers, Larne, Crusaders and Coleraine. His first managerial job, at Larne, lasted only six months in 2006 before he was sacked.
