In 13 years at Celtic Jim won just about every honour in the Scottish game including seven successive League championship medals, four full caps for his country and a runners up medal from the 1970 European Cup final . Given a free transfer by the Bhoys in 1975 Gordon Milne persuaded the tough-tackling but elegant full-back to try his hand in the English game. He kept Chris Cattlin out of the side for most of the season before suffering a hamstring injury and failed to win his place back. He briefly played for Ayr United before retiring and becoming an accountant in Glasgow. His brother Frank played for Celtic, Ipswich and Halifax.
