Micky Adams signed James on a free transfer from Leicester City in July 2005. He had played in Adams’ promotion team in 2003 and scored in a victory at Highfield Road but had lost his way somewhat following Adams’ departure. Initially used as a striker James failed to impress and his goals were scarce, but then after a switch to a wide right midfield role he blossomed. Pace was never one of his strong points but he had an excellent football brain and held the ball up well. His deft flicked headers could create opening for others and he was first choice in that position for the rest of the season. In July 2006 Crystal Palace offered cash-strapped City £500,000 for the former Ipswich man and he joined the Eagles where he had mixed fortunes.
