Noel Cantwell signed the veteran Scottish international in August 1971 after St John had spent a few months playing in South Africa for Hellenic following a glittering ten year career at Anfield in Bill Shankly’s great side of the 1960s. Already a Scottish international when he arrived at Liverpool he played over 450 games for the Reds and scored more than 120 goals as a deep lying centre-forward. In all he won 21 Scottish caps, two league titles and an FA Cup winners medal. His arrival at Highfield Road sparked a mini-revival and ‘the Saint’ scored one of his three goals with a stunning 30-yard effort at Goodison Park in his second game. Six months after his arrival Cantwell was sacked and St John was up in arms and left the club soon afterwards. After a brief spell at Tranmere he hung up his boots and had an unsuccessful spell as a manager with Portsmouth before going into the media. He became famous for the television programme ‘Saint & Greavsie’ where his double act with Jimmy Greaves proved a successful partnership. Ian was a popular after-dinner speaker and avid golfer before his death in 2021.
