A prodigious youngster who won Irish youth caps and helped Arsenal to win the 2000 FA Youth Cup (beating City). He made only three first team appearances at Highbury and was loaned out to a variety of clubs. Signed on a free transfer by Gary McAllister in 2003, the attacking midfielder scored on his debut against Peterborough in the League Cup and scored a stunning 30-yard goal against Stoke. An ankle injury plagued him and he was rarely played in his favourite striking role. He went on loan to Sheffield Wednesday and Livingston in 2005.
Internationally, Barrett represented the Republic of Ireland across various age levels, earning six senior caps and scoring two goals. He was part of the Irish squad that won the 1998 UEFA European Under-16 Championship. After leaving Coventry, Barrett continued his career with clubs including Falkirk, St Johnstone, and Shamrock Rovers, before retiring due to ongoing injury issues.
