A product of the Modern Machines youth policy of the 1950s Gordon was an outstanding winger and one of a number of outstanding youngsters being groomed for the future. Players like Reg Matthews, Frank Austin, Lol Harvey, Peter and Jimmy Hill and Ray Sambrook could have formed the nucleus of the club for ten years but sadly the majority were sold to bigger clubs. Nutt was one of the first to leave in December 1954, signing for First Division Cardiff for £18,000. He was only at Ninian Park for ten months before Arsenal snapped him up and he enjoyed five good years at Highbury making 51 appearances including the famous 4-5 defeat by Manchester United a few days before the 1958 Munich disaster. Gordon was a skilful winger who loved to take on his full-back and have a crack at goal. He scored a stunning goal on his debut and within eighteen months he was a regular in the side having taken over from the legendary Plum Warner. After leaving Arsenal he had a brief spell at Southend before emigrating to Australia where he set up a successful film lighting company. He did return to Coventry for the first time for many years and attended the Former Players Day where despite suffering from dementia he enjoyed the company of many old colleagues.
