As a baby was brought to his father's native Liverpool, so that his father could assist the war effort and the family was later evacuated to Scotland, and Gerry was brought up in Motherwell with his younger brother Joe who won full caps for England. Gerry had a somewhat nomadic playing career, being on Chelsea’s books and then making a name as a goalscorer for St Mirren, once scoring ten goals in a Scottish Cup game against Glasgow University. From there it was Manchester City, Hibernian and Ipswich before Noel Cantwell paid £20,000 to bring him to Highfield Road. His career at City was brief but he did score some vital goals. After being released by City he played and coached in non-league football for Margate, Nuneaton Borough, Bedworth United and Racing Warwick. Gerry later worked for Jaguar Cars and then retired back to Scotland. He has two talented athletes as daughters, Lorraine and Karen have both represented Great Britain.
