Jimmy Hill signed the much-travelled centre-forward from Southampton for £12,500 in March 1964 when the Third Division promotion push was stuttering. The bustling striker had played for Everton, Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth and was one of the best headers of the ball outside the top division. On his home debut he scored a hat-trick against Oldham and certainly repaid his fee with five goals in the run-in. There was never the chance that he would replace the fan’s favourite George Hudson and after nine appearances the following season he was on the move again, to Swansea. He continued to score goals in his career that took him to Walsall, New York (the Generals), Brentford and Halifax. He went into management with the last mentioned and had immediate success leading the Yorkshire club to their highest ever finish (3rd) in 1971. He moved on to Watford but failed to replicate that success and in 1973 moved to Iceland to manage Akranes. A return to Halifax in 1978 was not a success and he was sacked in 1981.
