Few people outside of Holland had heard of George before Gordon Strachan paid Feyenoord £220,000 for him in December 1997. However less than two years later the tough-tackling midfield player became a hot property and Aston Villa paid £4.5 million for him. Despite being sent off in his second game for the Sky Blues, at West Ham, his influence in his first season was enormous and it was fourteen games before he appeared on the losing side. Reputations meant little to George and he upset Manchester United’s Paul Ince in the famous Christmas victory and played a big part in the Cup win at Villa Park – City’s first ever win there.
Whilst his form dipped the following season he put in another great performance at Villa, scoring twice in a 4-1 win and prompted the Birmingham club to pay the large fee after allegedly tapping the player up. In 2002 he joined Middlesbrough after a fall-out with Graham Taylor, and he latterly had spells with Hull City and Nottingham Forest as well as time in Greece and Malaysia before retiring. He won four caps for his naturalised country Holland.
He moved into coaching taking up roles in Malaysia, with Blackburn Rovers and former club Aston Villa. After a time as assistant manager of the Ghana national team he returned to the Sky Blues in July 2004 as part of the re-structured coaching set up after Adi Viveash left the club but was released after the appointment of Frank Lampard as head coach just 4 months later.
