Gary McAllister signed the promising young Scot on a season’s long loan from Newcastle and he was a virtual ever-present for the Sky Blues in a season which started promisingly but went downhill after Christmas. He was one of few bright spots during his time at the club and it was disappointing that he was not signed when he was released by Newcastle in the summer of 2003. He joined Hibernian instead and developed into one of Scotland’s finest central defenders earning a big money move to Celtic. Gary is younger brother of Stephen.
Caldwell moved into management with spells Wigan Athletic, Chesterfield, Partick Thistle and since 2022, Exter City.
