Borrowdale began his career at Crystal Palace, making his debut at 17 in December 2002. By age 21, he had accumulated over 100 appearances and was named the club's "Young Player of the Year" for the 2006–07 season. In 2007, Borrowdale joined City, reuniting with former Palace manager Iain Dowie. His tenure at Coventry was challenging; the team's struggles and Dowie's departure led to limited playing time, resulting in only 21 appearances. In September 2008, he was loaned to Colchester United for a month, where he made four appearances.
After his stint at Coventry, Borrowdale signed permanently with Queens Park Rangers in January 2009, following a loan period. He later had multiple loan spells, including at Brighton & Hove Albion, Charlton Athletic, Carlisle United, and Barnet. Subsequently, he played for clubs such as Carrick Rangers, Tonbridge Angels, Margate, Gillingham, and Greenwich Borough, where he also took up a coaching role in May 2016.
