A product of City’s youth policy in the 1970s Gary had two spells at the club but failed to reproduce the goalscoring form that made him a massive success at Sheffield Wednesday and QPR between his two periods at Coventry. Originally a winger, he was allowed to leave for £100,000 because of the promise of Peter Bodak and scored prolifically, helping Wednesday to two promotions and winning an England Under 21 cap. Re-signed by John Sillett in 1988 from QPR, Gary failed to impress and was sold to West Brom in 1990. He later played for Forest, Stoke, Darlington and Lincoln. For the last few years he has lived in Cornwall where he is involved with holiday accommodation.
