After joining City from school Gareth developed into a useful stand-in striker. He was given a daunting debut in Don Mackay’s team in place of the injured Cyrille Regis but did not let the team down. A year later he joined Rotherham as part of the deal that brought Dean Emerson to City. At Millmoor he scored regularly and earned a move to Hibernian in 1988 where he later teamed up with Keith Houchen. A member of Hibs’s 1991 League Cup winning side, he spent nine years at Easter Road and made over 250 appearances before ending his playing career at Alloa.
He left his job as assistant manager at Brechin City to become reserve team coach at Hibs under his former teammate John Collins.
