The skilful French defender was taken on a month’s loan from Bolton in October 2004 and looked a cultured player in his debut. He looked like the defensive organiser that the team had lacked under Peter Reid and his loan spell was extended for a second month. However his later appearances lacked consistency and he returned to Bolton after Christmas. Laville represented France at the 1996 Olympics and had ten years at Olympique Lyon, helping them to two Ligue 1 championships in 2002 and 2003. After being released by Bolton in 2005 he spent two years with Bastia but retired in 2007.
