Ernie Hunt was one of the true Sky Blue greats - a player whose game was full of skill, character and humour. He began his career with his home-town club, becoming a star in the great Swindon side which included Mike Summerbee, Don Rogers and Roger Smart. In 1965 he moved to Wolves and scored 20 goals in their promotion season in 1967. Then followed six unhappy months at Everton before Noel Cantwell brought him to Coventry for a cut-price £65,000. He made his debut in a 2-0 home win over Manchester United and looked a class player from day one. In the Cantwell era, when the emphasis was very much on defence, Hunt could be relied upon to provide the attacking flair. Of all his goals for City none were more indelibly marked on the memory, or at the time more hotly debated, than the ‘donkey-kick’ contrived with Willie Carr against champions Everton in October 1970. After Cantwell’s departure Ernie struggled to hold a place and left to join Bristol City in 1973.
