The Scottish international midfielder cum striker was a big signing for City in early 1996. Ron Atkinson paid Aberdeen £1.75 million but the slightly built Scot failed to make a big impression. His good games were few and far between although he scored a vital winning goal against QPR in his first season and topped a fine performance in the 1996 FA Cup win at Blackburn with a goal. Jess was too often easily muscled out by stronger players in midfield despite a high level of skill. In July 1997 he returned to Aberdeen for £700,000 and added a further 120 odd appearances to the 200 he had made before his move to City. He returned to England in 2000 and played for Bradford City, Nottingham Forest and Northampton. Jess was PFA Young Player of the year in Scotland in 1991 and 1993 and won 18 full caps.
